If there are no more rebases going on anytime soon, could you perhaps just change the default on the git tree's template? Initially, I had ignored config updates that came along with rebases to newer kernel versions (e.g. rc3 to rc4) to just do a mass update for upstream changes. However, when we do change our default configs for bug reports, or to enable specific features, it should not be ignored. This is important information to have in the changelog.
