[Impact]
This reverts a patch that introduced a possible null pointer dereference.

[Fix]
The fix is to revert the patch that introduced the error.  This has been backported to the 5.15 stable branch upstream, and should be included in our jammy build as well.

[Test Plan]
I have tested the scenario listed in the commit message, and verified the results.

[Where problems could occur]
This change reverts a previous commit, and prevents a null pointer dereference.  The impact of this should be low.
