I wonder why a framebuffer, which in kernel is half-maintained (only odd
fixes before Helge Deller took maintenance), is needed for booting a
cloud machine. IOW, why something for a display is needed for booting a
mostly display-less machine.

If you have such information, maybe add to bug tracker or to commit?
