bc8a76a152c5f9ef3b48104154a65a68a8b76946 is a fix/workaround for Gen9
GPUs. In Xenial, the "i915_bpo" driver (located at ubuntu/i915/ in the
Xenial kernel tree) is the i915 driver that handles Gen9 GPUs. I
backported bc8a76a152c5f9ef3b48104154a65a68a8b76946 specifically to the
i915_bpo driver for that reason.

That said, I think it does make sense to go ahead and apply the upstream
stable backport of bc8a76a152c5f9ef3b48104154a65a68a8b76946 to the
regular i915 driver (located at drivers/gpu/drm/i915/ in the Xenial
kernel tree) just in case someone was able to get the regular i915
driver to load for Gen9 devices. It isn't urgent to apply.
