The first patch is indeed superfluous,
   [PATCH 1/2 Xenial SRU] drm/atomic: Add
__drm_atomic_helper_connector_reset, v2.

I have verified on my hardware that bug #1542939 can be fixed by
applying only the second patch,
  [PATCH 2/2 Xenial SRU] drm/atomic: Remove drm_atomic_connectors_for_crtc.

My apologies for overlooking this and thanks to Stefan for his
elucidative comment.
