asus G74SX-A1 laptop hangs on booting with kernel newer than 3.0.0-13-generic

(normally, i'd ask about this on just the standard ubuntu user
mailing list (which i did) but i'm getting increasingly desperate to
solve this so i'm going to beg for help here.)

  i have a 64-bit ASUS G74SX-A1 laptop running updated 11.10, and it's
been fine booting the slightly older 3.0.0-13-generic kernel, but
every kernel since then has frozen the system almost immediately and
i'm suddenly in the position where i *need* to solve this since i want
to build and run a hand-rolled kernel based on the latest git tree.

booting any newer kernel in recovery mode shows the boot process
getting as far as:

  Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ...

and *possibly* a couple more lines recognizing any connected USB
devices such as a keyboard and mouse, but that's it.

i then configured and built a new kernel from the current git tree
and using the config file from the last known working kernel, booted
*that* in recovery mode, and it got as far as:

  Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ...

and that really was it -- frozen. when i boot the working kernel in
recovery mode, right after that line, i get:

done. hostname start/running

and a shell prompt shortly thereafter, so i'm trying to figure out
what's going on in between those two steps that works with an older
kernel but not with the newer ones.

as i said, i'm getting increasingly desperate and open to any
