This is a massive update, but it is well contained within the ASoC 
driver and so it shouldn't affect other non ASoC-sound cards, such as 
all our normal laptops etc.

Before pulling this in: what can we do to make sure we don't get 
regressions somewhere else? What other ASoCs do we have access to, and 
can we test them thoroughly to make sure we don't break them?

As for how much this increases the maintenance burden, I'll let someone 
else answer.
