    We've (perhaps erroneously) lost the patch carried in Karmic that
    disables HDA beep by default.  Weeping and gnashing of teeth ensued,
    etc.  Fix it by reapplying the missing hunk.

Looking at the commit you suggest that we lost this change in Lucid, but
looking at Jaunty and Karmic we do not have that change as far as I can
see.  Both show that line as:

        beep->enabled = 1;

As I remember we things I had to mute that channel on my Dell by hand to
stop it.  I am suspicious we have lost something somewhere else.
