make-kpkg with update-initramfs

Hi All,
I am trying to create a 2.6.31 kernel package on Hardy using make-kpkg. 
It all seems to work ok except that I am trying to make a package that 
automatically runs update-initramfs on installation. I am passing the 
--initrd flag to make-kpkg however it doesn't seem to build an initrd 
package nor does it run update-initramfs on installation. Can anyone 
point me in the right direction?
