Ubuntu 9.04 kernel configuration leads to incompatibility with loop-aes and breaks packages

Hello everybody,

reports about broken packages (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/loop-aes-source/+bug/342902) and my own difficulties with the current Jaunty Jackalope kernel led to my subscription and this report.

Since version 8.10 the kernel-team has changed at least this point in its kernel configuration from:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=m
to:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=y

This modification makes it impossible to use the standard ubuntu kernel with loop-aes (http://loop-aes.sourceforge.net/) any longer. A kernel recompile with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=m is needed each time the kernel will be updated. In case there is no just cause for the above hinted modification I politely demand the kernel-team to rethink this change.

Loop-aes is an encryption software package depending on loop to be build as a module and *not* compiled into the kernel. I will rather migrate to another distribution than using LUKS or mainline crypto stuff. Please let me know if there is one good reason why to build loop into the kernel.

I´m looking forward to hear from the kernel-team in hope for a positive response to my remarks.

Kind regards,
Peter
