You didn't ask about bisection. Not only that, but the madwifi driver
hasn't changed for the entire time hardy was in development, and since
release.

I would find it very very surprising that that the kernel itself broke
for just the madwifi driver.

Here's another suggestion (and believe me, this happens a lot), but have
you checked your wireless kill switch to make sure it isn't flipped? The
error message sounds suspiciously like it being disabled.
