failed upgrade

I am unable to upgrade the Linux-image-386 or the
Linux-restricted-modules-386.   I've tried running apt-get in a terminal
window with the following errors:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is
another process using it?


I also tried using the synaptic package manager with no luck.  Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated.
