Status of gutsy kernel

The gutsy GIT is open now, based on upstream linux-2.6. It boasts a
brand new build system[1]. It's currently known to build and boot for
i386(generic), x86_64(generic) and powerpc64-smp(POWER5).

I've got linux-restricted-modules locally built against the new header
packages with no problems. My Core2Duo is running the new kernel and the
nvidia-glx package from this build.

The plan for gutsy is to move the ubuntu/ and debian/firmware/
directories to a new package called linux-ubuntu-modules, which is
in-progress by Kyle. It will be very similar to linux-restricted-modules
except that it is the free drivers.

I'm holding off until after 2.6.21 is released so we can open up gutsy
with a 2.6.22-rc kernel (I don't want to upload 2.6.21, and follow it
with 2.6.22 a week later).

Once 2.6.21 is released upstream, and Kyle finishes
linux-ubuntu-modules, we'll have new kernels for gutsy.
