ULi M1689 chipset and Linux Kernel

A number of users have purchased Chaintech S1689 64-bit mainboards and had difficulty trying to install Ubuntu 64-bit and other 64-bit distributions.

The 32-bit versions install and run OK, but the 64 frezes and shows error messages such as "kernel panic" and problems with syncing.

Some users report that they have installed Gentoo Linux with a 2.6.11 or 2.6.12 kernel, But installing Gentoo is a long, drawn out process which most Ubuntu lovers wouldn't like.

Evedently the problem also exists with other lower cost mainboards such as Asrock which use the same chipset. It's not a BIOS matter.

Can you shed any light on this issue with the ULi chipset?

Thanks!
