not sure so I tried both of those:
live noapic
live nolapic
... with no difference. Still sticks at same place.

Ctrl Alt F1 doesn't do anything. I noticed, however, that it's not a hard
freeze. Ctrl Alt Del still works and I see it come up saying kill processes, etc
and then it reboots.
