encountered this error on random again. i can not give any more detail
when this error occurs but i did find a fix for the problem which works
at the moment. i am going to post the fix and reopend the bug.

Solution from [gentoo-wiki.com(http://gentoo-wiki.com/Cups)]: in the CUPS web interface, ignore the fact that the printer appears nowhere, and manually enter the device URI "parallel:/dev/usb/lp0".
