As you have reported during testing with ubuntu-bug, that the image problem is also with gstreamer[direct output from the video].
The bug is not in cheese , it just reads the gstreamer pipeline. [gstreamer-error is the tag we use for when reporter notices the same error]

The webcam not being detected is a kernel regression.
