Reconnecting the session fixes the issue, no need to unload module or reset.
The connection does not drop but no traffic passes through the interface, no errors seen with ifconfig and no traffic seen via tcpdump. Time to failure varies but is greatly increase with small file transfers, large file transfers keep the connection alive.

No additional logs with (network|modem)-manager in debug mode apart from
the initial connection messages.
