Hi there, i'm new in Ubuntu and have Dell E5410 which crashes as you
mentioned in your case. I started with Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
which hangup during the normal boot up. I was forced to run in safemode
and went into shell command mode and update the kernel to 2.6.31-22 by
entering the following and E5410 is booting up without problem with this
version of kernel.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.31-19-generic
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-backports-modules-karmic-generic
sudo apt-get update

However, this kernel is only workable if you do not use any external
monitor/E-port. Something is still not right with the "IntelĀ® HD
Graphics with dynamic frequency". Everything is running well except it
hangs if you plug in the external VGA. It won't start up if you slot it
into the E-port, unless you boot it up and slot it into the E-port and
never try on the external monitor from the E-port.

Would appreciate if anyone can help me if there is the right kernel to
be updated in order to resolve this problem. As my notebook is running
well now, I hope by renewing it will not crash my system....
