@Corona
Thanks very much, it's genuinely useful to have these things explained... and I'm reassured to hear that people somewhere are likely to be working on these new chips as we speak.

Just one thing about installing a new kernel: if I haven't been able to
install an Ubuntu system at all, how can I install .deb packages? As I
understand it you are talking about installing these packages from
within a functioning Ubuntu system, right?

So far, 10.04 has not worked at all, as I said, with any of the multiple
permutations.

With 9.10 I have managed to get as far as the Desktop with "run before
installing"... but then I have found, every time I get there, that what
happens is that I click something with the mouse, and as the first thing
to run (e.g. "Install Ubuntu" icon), EVERYTHING freezes, mouse keyboard
etc. The only thing I can then do is close down the machine.

I'm now going to try with the 10.10 beta!
