Public bug reported:

I'm trying to install 10.10 Desktop beta (amd64) to a Macbook Pro 3,1.
Booting the LiveCD reliably fails with the following kernel panic:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkonwn-block(1,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.35-19-generic #28-Ubuntu
Call Trace:
 [<ffffffff815849e4>] panic+0x90/0x111
 [<ffffffff81aee343>] mount_block_root+0x273/0x29e
 [<ffffffff81aee3c4>] mount_root+0x56/0x5a

 [<ffffffff81aed71c>] ? kernel_init+0x0/0x1bd
 [<ffffffff8100aee0>] ? kernel_thread_helper+0x0/0x10

Steps to reproduce:
1) Boot while holding down the option key
2) The OS chooser appears + presents 4 options: Macintosh HD (my OSX 10.6 installation), Windows (an existing Ubuntu installation), "Windows" (on the CD), "EFI Boot" (on the CD). Choose "EFI Boot"
3) Grub menu appears with 2 options, "Install Ubuntu" and "Check disc for defects". Choose "Install Ubuntu"
4) Wait a few seconds, then the above panic appears

I use the "EFI Boot" option because the other option to install (select
the "Windows" entry w/ the CD-rom icon from the boot chooser) results in
a screen with the text, "Select CD-ROM Boot Type". No further input is
possible on that screen.

I tried booting the LiveCD with 'quiet splash' removed from the command
line and got the following:

I've also tried adding rootwait and rootdelay=10 to the command line.
Neither helped.

The 10.10 beta (i386) disc installs fine, I can only reproduce this with
the amd64 variant.

I can reproduce using the internal optical drive or an external
(Firewire) drive, and with multiple optical discs. I reproduced this
when trying to install to an empty partition on my HDD, so I don't think
it's in any way related to the existing Ubuntu installation on the
machine (the disk is brand-new). The machine is 64-bit capable, and has
previously run 64-bit versions of Jaunty, Karmic, and Lucid.
