problem persisted until now on ubuntu maverick i386. Recently i read
about option pci=nomsi and as i receive strange interrupts i gave this
option a try.

It seems now that the problem is gone with the following cmdline:

on my box "cat /proc/cmdline" results in
 
root=/dev/sda5 radeon.modeset=1 radeon.gartsize=128 pci=nomsi

The last option made the difference! No more nmi and the box works. I
will report here, when it hangs again.
