I just tested out the following two kernels:
linux-image-2.6.35-02063504-generic_2.6.35-02063504.201008271919_amd64
linux-image-2.6.36-999-generic_2.6.36-999.201009121120_amd64

I experienced the same symptom I experienced previously:
"as it was shutting down, the Ubuntu splash screen was displayed (and frozen) while the power LED was off" (normally the powere LED never goes off while the system is powered on) It remained like this until I pressed the reset button.
