Using System|Administration|Additional Drivers to again remove the
NVIDIA driver, the odd mouse stutter does return.

[probably off-topic:  while NVIDIA was loaded, system performance was
horrible, couldn't scroll the screen smoothly in a browser while a
compile was running in the background.  The i7 has 8 threads, but my
core2 duo doesn't have this problem, NVIDIA is really breaking Linux on
this computer]
