Looks like kernel 2.6.35.4-maverick (2.6.35-02063504-generic
#201008271919) fixes this bug!

I've been transferring hundreds of GB between two drives for the past
hour without a freeze.  Gnome does hiccup momentarily, e.g. while typing
this firefox will become unresponsive (greyish window) for a few seconds
but it's certainly acceptable compared to the hard crash I was
experiencing.  Unfortunately, I never was able to successfully generate
a crashdump.
