Updated the kernel, tried:

lshw | grep radeon

which ran successfully with no kernel crashes. However, when I ran the
same under sudo:

sudo lshw | grep radeon

had a kernel crash, then it locked up my OS requiring a hard reset.

1) uname -a
Linux name-laptop 2.6.35-20-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 3 14:49:14 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

2) cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.35-20.29-generic 2.6.35.4

4) (see attached 2_dmesg_lspci-vnvn.tar.bz2)
