Public bug reported:

This has happened only in Lucid, after a fresh install or upgrade from 9.10 (either in single or dual-boot with windows).
This is my LAPTOP info:
Model: HP 6735b
Processor: AMD Turion RM-70 X2
Graphics Card: ATI HD 3200 (integrated)
Memory: 2GB

After the Plymouth splash, I input my info at the login screen and the
hard drive icon appears as it begins to load the desktop, but then it
just freezes!!! No matter what I do this always happens.

Then I perform a console login and add the ppa(ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports)
for: "Packages Available for KDE Platform, Plasma and Applications 4.5.1"
and it seems to succeed at adding it, but I still don't update via "apt-get update".

Afterwards I attempt to do another normal login, but instead of the freezed screen I get the followng message dialog:
"kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 3. Check your installation." It has an "OK" button which returns me
to the login screen.
And now THIS happens everytime instead of the freezed screen.

IMPORTANT: On the LiveCD menu, if I select "nomodeset" from the F6 option, the DESKTOP loads apparently without problems, I even installed Kubuntu from here!!
Otherwise it just get the freeze screen (Hard Drive icon followed by a freezed screen). like after a fresh install.

The following is something curious but that might help:
* if I perform a failsafe graphic boot from recovery menu, I get a black screen

*I investigated and tried to boot kubuntu the same way as the LiveCD by doing the following:
Grub Menu -> Pressed "e" -> erased "quiet splash" and replaced it with "nomodeset" or "nomodeset xforcevesa".
But it still doesn't works.
I got that info here: http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/securitymonkey/black-screen-on-boot-with-ubuntu-104-lucid-lynx-solution-38426

Further investigation lead me to think there is an issue between the kernel and my graphics card, and while reading this:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting
This line caught my attention:
"Note that radeon KMS is work in progress, so installing the newest possible kernel is recommended. If you use Karmic, you may want to install the Lucid kernel. "

So maybe there's an issue between X.org and my ATI card.
Let me clear out that I'm still somewhat new in Linux, but try to learn how it works.

Sometime before, I was able to get it working by doing "apt-get install fglrx" followed by "aticonfig --initial", but even with this, the general performance was sluggish and I wasn't able to use any dektop effects.
But now it doesn't works anymore (either on 10.04 or 10.04.1)

Please forgive me if this bug report isn't correctly generated but I did
it from console using: ubuntu-bug linux

As you can see I've tried to solve it, and even asked for help in forums
but still no luck.
