I have added intel_ips as the line : blacklist intel_ips 
to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Which is the closest I could find to the file mentioned by markmywords (also it is the file I use to blacklist wireless usb drivers)
I am running 64 bit meerkat not sure if that is the difference between file names, or if markmywords is referring to a 32 bit solution

It seems though that the bug is possibly deeper than a sound issue: When
I attempt to play in rhythmbox or movie player NOTHING happens.. With
VLC player, the clock is keeping track of how many seconds I am not
hearing anything for me.

Not even running properly in rhythmbox  movie player....
