[Bug 667123] [NEW] Sidewinder Joystick not recognized: /dev/input/js0 not created

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic

First, with an up to date Ubuntu 10.04 64 bits distro, without touching
any config, the Sidewinder 3D Pro Plus joystick conected to my cmi_8738
sound card gameport is not detected. There is not /dev/input/js0 device.

The objective of this report is that even the joystick get detected
automatically on start, ideally, or if that is not possible, loading
some module it gets working.

Before reporting this bug, i tried several solutions proposed in forums,
like this:

According to descriptions on those forums, the following packages must
be loaded to get the joystick working:

gameport 
ns558 
joydev 
analog 
sidewinder 
snd-cmipci joystick_port=1

Also in some tells that MAKEDEV js0 must be executed before loading modules. None of the above worked for me. 
Without running MAKEDEV, and blacklisting above modules and loading them in the shown order got the gameport detected, when looking at dmesg, but no message about sidewinder or /dev/input/js0 node created.

Running MAKEDEV before loading the modules created of course the
/dev/input/js0, but seems that is not linked by the sidewinder.ko
because if i run jscal -c /dev/input/js0 I get a no device error. So
seems to be an error in the sidewinder.ko module.

The only solution I dind't tried, is the one proposed by sstakes1 in
this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1145181 , in wich
he modified and recompiled sidewinder.ko module. I don't like to modify
package provided files by hand, that's why I'm reporting this bug, so if
it's solved everyone will have the joystick working.

If you have some idea about any command I can run to get a more detailed
diagnostic, tell me and i will be glad to do it.
