I can confirm that this is a bug with that particular card/module. I
removed the card and switched to integrated audio (VIA Technologies,
Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller) and problems have
disappeared.

A possible workaround for the EMU10k1X was reported in the forums as
working:

System>Preferences>Sound.
Click the Hardware tab.
Under "Settings for the selected device:" choose the profile "Analog Surround 4.0 Output + Analog Stereo Input".
Click the Close button.
