I am having the same problem, however different hardware.
Ubuntu 10.10 clean install, Thinkpad R51, Intel 855GM graphics. The whole system appears to stop for ~0.5 second every 10 seconds, and top shows kslowd001 jump straight to the top of the list, just like teachop.

Disabling KMS for my chipset, using the kernel line "i915.modeset=0"
fixes this problem. Lucid didn't run at all on this laptop, suffered
from the 8xx graphics woes.
