Ok, looks like this has solved the issue for me!
As I have thought it was fixed a couple of times, I have left it longer to make sure, and it is fine.

As it is a MythTV box then its left to suspend as it sees fit, and so
has suspended/resumed many times with no recurrence of the static.

Only side effect has been the audio controls shown in alsamixer are now
different, so I assume it has detected the hardware differently ...
