I have downloaded, installed and rebooted with the kernel's you
suggested but it has seemingly made little difference.  When I shut down
my laptop it still freezes.

The only thing I did notice is that Network Manager now takes a little
longer to connect to my network (it has usually connected by the time
the desktop shows and is ready to use but with the new kernel it seems
to take 20-30s longer to connect).
