We tried this out on our M4500 on 10.10 Desktop x64 (2.6.35-22-generic).
We found the exact opposite of #3.  It works fine (goes to sleep and
comes back) with the "normal" drivers.  When we enabled the proprietary
nVidia drivers, the display would not come back from sleep (keyboard
backlight, etc worked - so we presume it was display only)
