As it turns out... it's not really gone. It's just that it takes more
time for the wireless adapter to lose the connection. And in fact, as it
is now NetworkManager doesn't appear to notice that the connection has
been lost, but the adapter stops working.

See attachment for the kernel logs... after the last 'On demand firmware
reload', the connection would no longer work and the system would need a
reboot in order to have it working again.
