using most recent update of 10.04
alsa packages, not sure which ones.

expected behavior: sound comes out the speakers.

have to turn pulseaudio off and use alsa for sound to work in jack and
other rt audio apps.  When computer boots lucid, login and system sounds
play at first and playing a file via mplayer will work, but rhythmbox,
audacity will not.  Jack will sometimes start, sometimes not, and
generally crashes as soon as audacity is started.

cat /proc/asound/cards returns correct sound card, 
"lsmod | grep snd" returns nothing.
going to sound prefs gives "waiting for sound to respond" or something like that and will not load.
