The difficulty of course is that you have a black screen with no
information; you could try:

Drop to a text console (ctrl-alt-f1) and kick the backup off from there, but before you do it run
    setterm -blank 0 

     that should turn off screen blank so if it does fail then maybe
it'll leave some interesting messages.  Failing a better way, a photo of
the messages would help.
