** Description changed:

  Running 10.04.1 LTS, 64-bit
- System works great under kernel 2.6.31-21-generic, however every kernel update causes the system to fail to boot.
+ System works great under kernel 2.6.31-21-generic, however every kernel update causes the system to fail to boot. This includes the current mainline kernel, which others seem to have had success with.

Hardware is home build on a ZOTAC NF630I-F-E with NVIDIA GEForce 7100
onboard graphics. Worked beautifully on Ubuntu 9.04; some issues with
the upgrade to 9.10, but ultimately worked beautifully there, too.
Upgraded to 10.04 in May, had immediate problems booting, but ultimately
got a working kernel (sorry, not sure what kernel version I started
  with).

Bottom line: kernel 2.6.31-21-generic works great. Nothing more recent
that I have tried will boot. The updates in Ubuntu have all failed to
boot. The mainline kernel doesn't boot. I would like to be able to run
the updated kernels, and update them normally.

As an aside, every kernel update also wrecks my grub default, because it
pushes my 2.6.31-21 kernel down 2 slots in the grub menu. In turn, since
this is a headless machine, I have to dismantle it, connect it to a
monitor and keyboard, fix the grub default, then put it back in its
  closet.
