The above is what I got by following the command in #4, executed immediately after problem occurred. This problem for me can be reproduced by:
1. Starting up/restarting computer.
2. At login screen, at the password prompt (i.e. the first text field I come across) turning on the mousepad causes a stream of '=' until a key is pressed.
3. This problem does not occur on subsequent turning on/off of the mousepad, unless the computer is restarted, in which case it will happen only once until another restart etc.

I am running Maverick Meerkat RC, fully updated as of 01:27 GMT+10 on
3/10/10.

I'm sorry my computer skills do not quite extend to testing upstream
kernels.

Thankyou for your help :)
