Many thanks for the comprehensive reply Jeremy.

I have confirmed that I have the latest version, but as I have no access
to the desk-top, I am unable to see, and therefore run, any programs
including Terminal.

As I mentioned in my original message, this is my first ever contact
with Linux, so task such as "testing the latest upstream kernel" with a
non-working system are way beyond me at the moment.

As my gut feeling is that this problem is something to do with the low
spec of the Dell GX150 I intend to abandon this attempt and get a more
up date PC with more memory and a more up to date graphics card.

Thanks once again for your help.

Please would you consider this one closed now.

Regards

Alan K.

Hi Alan,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development
release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please
run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 648240

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Hi,

I am brand new to Linux, and have just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 onto a
Dell Optiplex GX150 running at 1GHz with 512MB of RAM.

During startup I get two messages

  error: no suitable mode found
  error: unknown command 'terminal'

After the system completes startup, I have the default (colourful)
screen, but with no icons, and no desktop.

Right clicking the mouse anywhere on the screen gets me access to the
usual options

Using Ubuntu from the directly from the CD (not installing it on the
hard drive) does not produce the above problem

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Alan K.
