I switched from nvidia-current to nvidia-173 and now hibernate works
again.

I believe that is because of the changed driver interface. If you have
an unstable interface, you should really check, if driver and kernel
match.

For Ubuntu 10.04, you used an too new nvidia driver, so I had to use a a
newer kernel (2.6.34). For Ubuntu 10.10 you used an too new kernel
(2.6.35), so that I had to use an older nvidia driver (version 173
instead of current).
