The Dell 505 laptop's Graphical Processor Unit (GPU) is an Intel
82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics controller.

It seems that the latest Linux kernel versions don't yet work with Intel
845, i855 and other 8xx chips. See:

Some workarounds are given there if someone wishes to  try them.
