I believe this may well be a duplicate of #558378
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/558378), i.e.
related to a bug in the ATI module. I experienced the exact same issue
on a Samsung R20 (same gfx card). The workaround in the report of
#558378, i.e. providing radeon.modeset=0 as a startup parameter (via
"F7" in the Ubuntu startup menu when booting from CD) worked well for
me.
