[Bug 577564] [NEW] e1000 driver unstable

Public bug reported:

My system has two on-board nvidia nics and a PCI Intel 1000 gb nic.

Originally, when I built my system, I had to disable the on-board nics
and install an Intel nic because under Linux, the forcedeth drivers were
very unstable.

I have been running Ubuntu 8.10 fine with this configuration with
absolutely no problems. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit
desktop onto an Ext4 partition. Ever since I upgraded, my system has
gone down 3 three times. Each time before my system went down, my Intel
nic shows the connection link as down even though the link shows as
connected in my switch. Also, at this time, my system will eventually
become unresponsive forcing me to SysRq+reisub the system. I tried
using the mainline kernel 2.6.33-020633-generic and the problem still
persists. This bug report will show my system as having three ethernet
capable devices. Under normal circumstances, I have the on-board nvidia
nics disabled. If the forcedeth driver is better now, then maybe I
should get rid of the Intel nic, but the e1000 driver is touted as being
very stable and right now it is not. I would rather get this fixed,
because I have several machines at my work that run Ubuntu and they also
run this Intel nic. I will not be able to update my work machines to
Ubuntu 10.04 until this bug is fixed.

Steps to reproduce.

1. Turn on PC
2. Log on
3. Run chrome and listen to last.fm
4. When music stops, observe that
4.a ifconfig reveals link as down
   4.b rmmod e1000
   4.c modprobe e1000
4.d Link will not be detected
5. Reboot to restore network

Regression.

The network driver e1000 worked fine under Ubuntu 8.10
