I updated the kernel to 2.6.34-020634rc6-generic and the voila, the
function keys to change brightness works fine.

Issue with 5 being the least brightness is not yet resolved. Let me know if there is any workaround.
When the system is on battery, the brightness reduced automatically to half (5) which is least for me, and when I become idle the brightness is reduced to (0) which is highest for me (problem)
