ok, I tried out the following:

Following the specified link
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds), I decided to use the
kernel in directory "v2.6.34-rc2-karmic" from 06-Apr-2010 11:50, as this
was the newest with "karmic" in its name.

I installed the following debs:
- linux-headers-2.6.34-020634rc2_2.6.34-020634rc2_all.deb
- linux-headers-2.6.34-020634rc2-generic_2.6.34-020634rc2_i386.deb
- linux-image-2.6.34-020634rc2-generic_2.6.34-020634rc2_i386.deb

Result:
Actually no change.
After plugging in the SGH-G400, the phone switched off while loading its battery.
After that it switched it on (leaving it plugged in). After login the phone showed "conntected" state on the display.
Ubuntu didn't take notice of it.

Then I unplugged the phone and plugged it in again. The phone
immediately showed "connected" without any reboot or shutting down. But
Ubuntu didn't take notice of it again.

Sorry, I really hoped, that this would make a difference. Mmmh, maybe
some could give me tool, with which I could record the USB-traffic? Then
I could make a second test with my other phone (which actually works),
so the differences should be easy to see!?

In general I have other USB devices never showing this behaviour (some
sticks, camcorder, navigator, ...). So this is a problem of the SGH-400,
for sure. But it worked under Hardy, for sure as well!

Strange.
