Dear Jeremy,

following your recommendation I've installed kernel 2.6.34-999-generic.
Since the nvidia driver wasn't compiled (for this kernel) I ran in low-
resolution graphics mode. The suspend still doesn't work: the screen
goes to 'console mode' with a blinking cursor at the upper left corner
and that's it: the system hangs.

As you can see below, there's no particular problem logged into
/var/log/messages before the suspend attempt:

(/var/log/messages: end of 2.6.34-999 'session' and the beginning of the
standard kernel 'session' after a hard reboot):
