UPDATE:
installed Lucid 10.04 [64 bit & 32 bit] -
result... exactly the same as previous described
for Karmic.

USB wireless dongle works after the 'blacklist' edit but not without it
[recognizes network but will not connect].
3G dongle works before the edit and not after the edit.

This is definitely a Gnome degradation, not just Ubuntu [see previous
results].

Nice that 9.04 worked for everything 'out of the box' - not good that
Gnome distros in general killed this functionality and [in my case
Ubuntu itself with 9.10 distro & now 10.04].  Annoyingly it all works
under Windows - but no way am I going back to using that other than for
providing support [yuk].
