** Description changed:

I have a Logitech mx5500 Revolution mouse and keyboard set. Since using
Karmic, they have worked flawlessly (something I haven't seen with the
Revolution in Ubuntu). The typical behavior of this mouse is that its
wheel is "clicky" until the user spins fast enough that the mechanism
inside frees the wheel, allowing it to spin freely. On every start, this
is the behavior I get, however-

When the mouse is left along long enough (or power cycled via a switch),
it reverts to the 'broken' behavior I have seen before with Ubuntu.
Instead of spinning the wheel to make it enter free spin, a simple
"middle click" does it and middle click functionality is broken (ie, not
  registered at all).
