I can confirm this bug on upgrade to lucid from karmic.

rebooting with kernel 2.6.31 fixed the issue - although I had to edit
/etc/default/grub and comment out the following 2 lines to be able to
choose the kernel at boot:

#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

after editing /etc/default/grub, I had to run:

sudo update-grub
